Peyronie's Disease

Peyronie's Disease is a connective tissue disease that can result in penile deformity. The prevalence of diagnosed Peyronie's Disease in the United States has been estimated to be 0.5% amongst adult males. It is most common in men between the ages of 40 and 70.

Peyronie's Disease occurs when small fragments of scar tissue form in the penis. These fragments of scar tissue can cause the penis to bend significantly and can result in painful erections. Peyronie's Disease is diagnosed through a physical exam and or a dynamic ultrasound.

Causes

The leading cause of Peyronie's Disease is usually a minor injury to the penis. This type of injury may be a result of vigorous sex, athletic activity, or the result of an accident. In a much smaller number of cases, Peyronie's Disease is not caused by an injury. For this reason, researchers are investigating whether Peyronie's Disease might be linked to genetic or environmental factors.
